Lady Vols In The WNBA Update - Playoff Edition: Sept. 23

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The WNBA Playoffs get under way Thursday night, and four franchises featuring six of seven Lady Vols on rosters this season will be in action in the eight-team tournament.

The Minnesota Lynx (Rennia Davis/sidelined by injury) enter as the No. 3 seed with a 22-10 record, followed by the Seattle Storm (Cierra Burdick and Mercedes Russell) at No. 4 (21-11), the Chicago Sky (Diamond DeShields, Candace Parker and assistant coach Tonya Edwards) at No. 6 (16-16) and the Dallas Wings (Isabelle Harrison) at No. 7 (14-18).

The Las Vegas Aces, whose president is LVFL Nikki (Caldwell) Fargas, are the league's No. 2 overall seed at 24-8.

WNBA Playoffs 2021, presented by Google, will feature two single-elimination first-round contests and a pair of single-elimination second-round match-ups before embarking on a five-game series format for the semifinals and finals.

The No. 3 Lynx and No. 4 Storm will await home Sunday match-ups with first-round winners from tonight's games featuring No. 7 Dallas at No. 6 Chicago (8 p.m. ET, ESPN2) and No. 8 New York at No. 5 Phoenix (10 p.m. ET, ESPN2).

Tip times and TV information for the second-round contests on Sunday have not been announced. The Lynx and Storm franchises each have won four WNBA titles, with Russell contributing to Seattle claiming crowns in 2018 and 2020.

Semifinal-round action is slated to begin on Sept. 28 at No. 1 Connecticut and No. 2 Las Vegas at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. ET, respectively. Both game ones of the semifinals will be carried by ESPN2. The WNBA Finals are scheduled to begin on Oct. 10, with the five contests being televised by ABC, ESPN or ESPN2. The WNBA Finals will move up to start on October 6 or 8, however, if both semifinals end in three or four games.

After playing four games with Phoenix and three with Minnesota on temporary contracts earlier this season, Cierra Burdick has appeared in 14 total contests in 2021 and was signed by Seattle for the rest of the campaign…Her averages include 0.4 ppg. and 1.7 rpg. in seven games played for the Storm, with 5.0 minutes of duty per contest…Her most recent outing came on Sept. 12 at Las Vegas, when she notched season highs with 13 minutes, five rebounds, two blocks and a steal, and added a point.
