Mertena, Tomase Shine on Day One of Debbie Southern Fall Classic

GREENVILLE, S.C. – With the entire Tennessee women's tennis team in action at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic, Rebeka Mertena and Elza Tomase shined on day one, winning all three of their matches. Mertena also added a top-25 win in singles.
After rained delayed the start of play and flipped the schedule, Tennessee took the courts at 10 a.m. Mertena and Elza Tomase, a pair that played lots of tennis together in Latvia, won both of their matches against teams from the Palmetto state, beating Clemson 6-3, then following that up with a 7-6(4) win over a South Carolina combo.
Mertena, ranked No. 55, then took to the singles court face 25th-ranked Cameron Morra from North Carolina. The match was electric, with both players battling for momentum and energy. The senior Lady Vol got it done, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
The other side of the doubles team, Tomase, cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Rosie Garcia Gross from Georgia Tech.
Eléonora Molinaro was locked in an epic singles battle against Saby Nihalani from Wake Forest. She emerged triumphant, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5, to give the Lady Vols some momentum heading into tomorrow's action.
McGiffin/Symons and Kuczer/Adeshina both earned a doubles victory after dropping their first match.
