Tennessee Wraps Up Weekend at Furman Open

Tennessee Concludes Solid Furman Open
FURMAN, S.C. – With three singles wins in finals matches, the Tennessee women's tennis team wrapped up their first fall tournament, the Furman Open, Sunday morning at the Mickel Tennis Center.
UT's singles players went a combined 9-3 on the weekend while the doubles unit had a 5-2 record in action on Friday afternoon.
"It was a very productive weekend for all four girls," associate head coach Jarryd Chaplin said after the final match. "Each of them can probably see how some of the stuff we work on in practice has translated to a match. More importantly there is a lot we can take back to Knoxville."
Elza Tomase emerged victorious in the "Purple" flight, after being switched to play Rocio Safont from Charlotte for competitive reasons. She was scheduled to face teammate Callie Creath. The freshman turned in a 6-1, 6-4 win early in the day.
Kylie Duckworth also polished off a solid win against Kendall Couch from SEC foe South Carolina, 7-5, 6-2 in the consolation finals.
Olivia Symons would finish next in the "White" flight consolation. She faced Eleanor Schulson of Furman, and while the two battled it out into a third set, Symons came back after losing the first set to win 3-6, 7-5, (10-6).
The final match of the day came for junior Callie Creath. A three-hour, 40-minute affair lasting a full three sets against Emma Wilkins of Charlotte, Creath came up just short, 6-3, 6-7(4), 3-6, in what was otherwise a terrific weekend.
"It was great to see them all on the match court," Chaplin continued. "I think our freshman really got a better idea of how to go about competition after this weekend."
The Lady Vols return to the Upstate of South Carolina next weekend as they take part in the Debbie Southern Fall Classic, also hosted at Furman.
