Vol Tennis Lands Trio on All-America List
June 07, 2021 | Men's Tennis
After a highly successful dual season that was capped by the program's fourth-ever SEC Tournament Title, a trip to the NCAA team semifinals and a national champion doubles pair, the No. 4 Tennessee men's tennis team has placed two singles players and one doubles' pair on the ITA's All-American lists.
This is just the fifth time Tennessee has landed three or more players on either the ITA or NCAA All-American lists.
In singles, the Vols are led by freshman standout Johannus Monday who finished the season ranked ninth in the ITA's singles rankings.
Following Monday is senior Adam Walton who currently ranks eighth in the ITA singles rankings.
Joining Monday and Walton is junior Pat Harper who has teamed up with Walton all season at the No. 1 doubles position for the Vols as the pair currently ranks third in the ITA's doubles rankings after winning the NCAA individual doubles title and ending the season on a 12-match win streak.
During the dual season, Monday was one of the Vols most consistent players. The SEC Freshman of the Year went 11-1 in SEC play and 23-6 in dual action with victories over 14 ranked foes, while playing primarily at the No. 2 position. Monday is also a frontrunner for the ITA's region and national Rookie of the Year Awards.
A mainstay at No. 1 all year was Walton who put together a 14-8 record in singles play with a trio of ranked wins while playing at the toughest position in the singles lineup.
Walton closed the season playing his best ball, earning a spot on the NCAA All-Tournament team for No. 1 singles and doubles and went 15-1 overall during the NCAA Championships.
Walton has also upped his career singles win total to 98, just two victories away from becoming the 11th-ever Vol to reach 100 career singles triumphs. He also enters his final year of eligibility just 21 doubles victories away from reaching the century mark, meaning Walton is on the cusp of becoming just the sixth-ever Vol to amass 100 career doubles and singles wins.
In doubles, Walton and Harper were one of the top duos in the country, having been ranked inside the top-10 every week since March 24. The Australian tandem went 19-6 during the dual season, while racking up eight ranked wins and winning key matches to help UT clinch the doubles point against both South Carolina and Florida at the SEC Tournament and Arizona and Baylor in Orlando.
These are the first All-American honors for the Vols trio and marks the third year in the last four that the Orange & White have had at least one athlete recognized as one of the nation's best.
