No. 3 Vols Pummel Alabama A&M, 5-0, Advance to NCAA Second Round
May 08, 2021 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A dominant effort in both doubles and singles that saw the No. 3 Tennessee men's tennis team drop just seven total games, led the Vols to a 5-0 demolition of Alabama A&M in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday at Barksdale Stadium.
The win gives the Vols (25-3) three consecutive wins in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, while Alabama A&M (6-7) fell in its first ever tourney appearance.
UT made quick work of the Bulldogs in doubles, grabbing victories from junior Martim Prata and SEC Freshman of the Year Johannus Monday on court two (6-0) and the Australian tandem of senior Adam Walton and junior Pat Harper to give the Orange & White the early, 1-0 lead.
In singles, the Vols grabbed four wins in quick succession to clinch match point and then some.
Senior Andrew Rogers started the singles fun with a comprehensive, 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 to double the Vols advantage.
Minutes later, Walton put UT on the cusp of match point with a stellar, 6-2, 6-1 effort at No. 1.
Seconds after Walton, Prata clinched match point and a spot in the second round for UT with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph on court three.
As Prata clinched, graduate student Luca Wiedenmann doubled the clinch with a 6-1, 6-0 victory of his own on court four to cement the afternoon's final score line.
THE CLASSIC DOUBLE CLINCH
Luca Wiedenmann and Martim Prata's successive victories gave the Vols the rare double clinch, where even though the match has been clinched, the points that have already begun are allowed to finish, thus giving Wiedenmann his 114th career victory.
LUCA IS AS LUCA DOES
Wiedenmann's straight-set victory to finish off the afternoon, moves him just one victory away from tying for sixth on the programs all-time singles wins list with VFL Paul Annacone (115).
POSTSEASON PUTS DOUBLES ON DIFFERENT LEVEL
In four postseason dual matches, the Vols have won all four doubles points, winning a pair of doubles points without needing the result of all three courts. The result also improved Tennessee to a stellar, 22-1 record when claiming the all important doubles point.
