Lloyd Tabbed SEC Newcomer of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Lady Vol redshirt freshman Joella Lloyd has been named the Southeastern Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.

A sprinter from St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda, Lloyd broke a 28-year-old national record when she clocked a time of 11.19 seconds in the 100-meter dash at Saturday's Tennessee Challenge. The mark also broke a 13-year-old Lady Vol freshman record and ranks Lloyd as the No. 3 performer in school history. This season, her time ranks fourth in the SEC and eighth on the 2021 NCAA DI list.

Lloyd also ran the second leg of Tennessee's season-best 4x100-meter relay on Saturday, as the Lady Vols posted a time of 43.59 seconds—tying the program's No. 4 all-time performance. The mark ranks third in the conference and eighth in the nation during the 2021 outdoor campaign.

The SEC Newcomer of the Week award was created by the conference this season to recognize redshirt freshmen and sophomores who did not get a chance compete last outdoor season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lloyd is the first member of the Tennessee track & field program to earn the distinction.
