
Seggern, Butler Nominated For SEC's McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Tennessee's Chelsea Seggern and Matthew Butler have been nominated for the Southeastern Conference's H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship, it was announced on Tuesday.
The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the SEC since 1986 to the league's top male and female scholar-athletes.
Seggern is in her fifth-year with the Tennessee softball program and has proven to be a leader on and off the field. The Thrall, Texas, native has served as a team captain for three seasons and has been a reliable every day starter since arriving on campus for her freshman season in 2016-17.Â
Seggern is majoring in kinesiology with a minor in biological sciences. She has been named a 2017 and 2018 Easton/NFCA Scholar-Athlete, landed on the 2016-17 First-Year SEC Academic Honor Roll and has been on multiple SEC Spring Honor Roll listings.Â
In 2019, Seggern was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District 3 Team and to the SEC Community Service Team. She was also named a Chancellor's Honors Award winner for Extraordinary Academic Achievement & Scholar Athlete.Â
On the field, Seggern was tabbed a 2017 SEC All-Freshman Team member and earned 2018 NFCA All-Region third-team honors. She currently ranks second all-time in Tennessee history in doubles with 65 and is UT's all-time hit-by-pitch leader with 37 and counting.
Butler is entering his fifth year with the Volunteer football program this fall. A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Butler was named a 2021 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient, becoming the seventh UT football student-athlete to earn the honor all-time.
A four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, he earned his undergraduate degree in political science in December 2020, maintaining a 3.63 GPA. Butler served on the 2018-19 VOLeaders Academy where he had the opportunity to visit Rwanda.
On the field, Butler is a leader on the defensive line. He's appeared in 40 career games with 14 starts, accumulating 105 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.
The SEC will name the 2021 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship in mid-May.
