Thomas, George Claim All-Region Accolades
May 12, 2021 | Soccer
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Tennessee strikers Jaida Thomas and Mackenzie George have each been named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region Teams, the organization announced Tuesday night. Thomas was selected to the first team, while George picked up third team honors.
Â
This marks the seventh straight season that Tennessee has had multiple players recognized as regional standouts. Both Vol forwards are first-time All-Region honorees, and Thomas' selection to the first team earns her a spot on the 2020-21 All-America ballot.
Â
Jaida Thomas • First Team All-Southeast Region
A redshirt freshman from Irving, Texas, Thomas put up one of the most prolific debut campaigns in program history, leading the SEC with 12 goals, 25 points and five game-winners during the 2020-21 season. She logged four consecutive multi-goal outings to open the spring semester, becoming the first SEC player to accomplish that feat since U.S. National Team legend and former Florida Gator Abby Wambach in 2001.
Â
Thomas' five game-winning goals were the most ever recorded by a Tennessee freshman in a single season, while her 12 scores overall were the second-most from a Lady Vol rookie all-time. She was recognized on the SEC All-Freshman Team at the conclusion of the fall conference slate, in addition to picking up five weekly awards from the league office throughout the season.
Â
Mackenzie George • Third Team All-Southeast Region
A junior in her second season on Rocky Top, George led the Vols with 1,325 minutes played and ranked second on the team with four goals and four assists in 2020-21. The forward from Lincoln, California, had her first career brace against Vanderbilt in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals, and followed that performance recording goals in back-to-back wins over Gardner-Webb and App State to open the spring semester.
Â
George picked up her first career All-SEC nod from the league's head coaches, earning second team honors at the end of the fall semester.
