Multis Lead The Way Thursday At Tennessee Relays

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee heptathletes Ayesha Champagnie and Kiara Rhodes sit second and third in the standings, respectively, through day one of the Tennessee Relays heptathlon as the Big Orange opened its annual home meet Thursday at Tom Black Track. UT competed in 11 events on the day, claiming 11 top-five finishes overall.

Competing in her first heptathlon since the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championships, Champagnie tallied 3,312 points to rank second overall through four events completed. The graduate student from Kingston, Jamaica, had a solid boost from her first-place finish in the shot put, launching the metal sphere 13.45 meters (44-1.5) to score 757 points. She also took third in the 100-meter hurdles (14.04) while tabbing fifth-place outings in the high jump (1.61m / 5-3.25) and 200-meter dash (25.57).

Rhodes was right behind Champagnie in the day's final standings, sitting third overall with 3,191 points. The Memphis native won both sprinting events with times of 13.91 and 24.86 in the 100-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash, respectively. She also took third place in the high jump with a clearance of 1.67 meters (5-5.75) before logging a throw of 9.28 meters (30-5.5) in the shot put.

HAMMER VOLS: Tennessee wrapped up night one of the meet competing in the women's and men's hammer throw. Graduate student Nayoka Clunis stood out for the Lady Vols as she heaved a season-best mark of 61.78 meters (203-0), bumping herself up one spot to No. 2 on the program's all-time top-10 list. VFL and six-time NCAA All-American Stamatia Scarvelis also competed on the women's side, taking third place in her season opener with a mark of 68.31 meters (224-1).

Kilkís, Greece, native Georgios Korakidis represented UT on the men's side, finishing third as his opening throw traveled 65.25 meters (214-1). Thursday's competition marked his first hammer throw outing of the 2021 outdoor season.

DECATHLON UPDATE: The Vols had a pair of redshirt freshmen competing in the Scott Hartman decathlon on Thursday as Yariel Soto and Peyton Davis made their outdoor multi debuts. Soto stands fourth with a day one total of 3,842 points, while Davis is currently 10th with 3,441.

A redshirt freshman from Hatillo, Puerto Rico, Soto posted the top times in the 100-meter and 400-meter dashes with times of 10.89 and 49.19, respectively. He also had the field's best long jump with a performance of 7.22 meters (23-8.25) that garnered 866 points.

The rookie duo combined for three outdoor personal records on the afternoon, as Soto cleared a bar of 1.89 meters (6-2.25) in the high jump while Davis added PRs in the 100-meter (11.62) and 400-meter (51.63).

UP NEXT: The Tennessee Relays decathlon and heptathlon will wrap up Friday, beginning at 11 a.m. with the men's 110-meter hurdles before the women's long jump starts at 11:30.
