Vol Tennis Adds Highly Touted Mitsui to 2021 Signing Class
April 05, 2021 | Men's Tennis
The Tennessee men's tennis team has announced the signing of international junior standout, Shunsuke Mitsui on Monday.
The Shizuoka, Japan native has signed his national letter of intent and is set to arrive in Knoxville in time for the Fall 2021 semester, becoming the first Japanese native to sign for the Vols.
"Shunsuke will provide an immediate impact for our team," head coach Chris Woodruff said. "He loves the game, has ambitions to play pro tennis, but most importantly he's a good person. He will thrive in the culture we have established here."
Mitsui chose Tennessee over multiple top-10 teams and will come to East Tennessee having held a career-high ITF Junior World Ranking of Sixth, while appearing in all four junior Grand Slam tournaments (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, U.S. Open).
In his junior career he has won nine doubles titles and five singles crowns, while bringing home the prestigious Orange Bowl tournament title in doubles in 2019.
He will also be the first top-10 ITF recruit to play for the Vols since 2009-10 when UT signed Rhyne Williams and Tennys Sandgren.
The junior standout held a career-high Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) of 13.21 and will provide an immediate spark to the talent that will be both returning and arriving in Knoxville next season.
Mitsui will join fellow 2021 class members, Conor Gannon and Louis Cloud in Knoxville in the Fall, rounding out a highly rated and talented recruiting class.
