April 21, 2021 | Soccer
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Former Tennessee soccer standout Danielle Marcano will head to Iceland next month to embark on her professional playing career. The striker from Buford, Georgia, signed her first pro contract on Tuesday with HK Kópavogur, a second-division club that will compete in the Inkasso League during the 2021 campaign.
A member of the Tennessee soccer program from 2015-18, Marcano totaled 76 caps, 16 goals, seven assists and six game-winners over the course of her career on Rocky Top. She was instrumental during UT's run to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals in 2018, scoring back-to-back braces in the Vols' second- and third-round victories over Arizona and No. 16 Texas A&M.
The forward made her mark in the Tennessee soccer record book as UT's all-time leading scorer in NCAA Tournament matches—tallying seven goals for the Big Orange during the 2017 and 2018 postseasons.
Marcano is one of 10 active professional players from the Tennessee soccer program—joining former Vols Michelle Alozie (Houston Dash), Carlyn Baldwin (Sporting CP), Katie Cousins (Thróttur Reykjavík), Maya Neal (Le Havre AC), Sonia Ouchene Salón (Stade de Reims), Bunny Shaw (Bordeaux), MA Vignola (Valur Reykjavík), Hannah Wilkinson (MSV Duisburg) and Shae Yanez (London City Lionesses).
