Vols Tied for Sixth Through Two Rounds at SEC Championships
April 22, 2021 | Men's Golf
SEA ISLAND, Ga. – The 18th-ranked Tennessee men's golf team wrapped up its second round of competition at the SEC Championships Thursday and is tied for sixth place entering the tournament's final round of stroke play.
Â
The Vols shot 12-over for the day on Thursday and sit at 9-over for the week in total.
Â
The results of Friday's third round will determine the SEC individual champion, but the team champion will be crowned following Saturday and Sunday's match play. Match play, which will consist of quarterfinals, semifinals and a championship round, will include the top eight teams on the leaderboard following Friday's round.
Â
"We got off to a really bad start today, but I was very proud of how the guys hung in there," head coach Brennan Webb said. "We played the last 12 holes under par in some incredibly tough conditions, so I look for us to carry that momentum into tomorrow."
Â
Leading the Vols for the second consecutive day was senior Spencer Cross, who is set to enter the third round tied for fourth place overall. Tennessee has had top-five finishers at the last two SEC Championships, as Hunter Wolcott tied for fourth place in 2019 and Lorenzo Scalise tied for third in 2018.
Â
Cross shot 3-over on Thursday, but thanks to his career-low round of 65 on Wednesday, sits at 2-under overall entering Friday's final round. Only eight golfers in the entire 70-man field currently have a two-round score under par. With his fourth-place standing, Cross is on pace to achieve his highest individual finish of the season in what is his first career appearance at the SEC Championships.
Â
Bryce Lewis carded an equal 3-over 73 score to Cross on Thursday, bringing his two-round total to 3-over 143. Tied for 21st place through two rounds, Lewis is on pace for his fifth top-25 finish of the season.
Â
Tennessee's best second-round score came from Rhys Nevin, who shot 2-over 72 for the second straight day. Nevin is in 27th place and is searching for his fifth top-25 finish of the season. Competing in his fourth SEC Championships as a Vol, Nevin is also searching for his highest SEC finish, currently a 21st place finish in 2019.
Â
Shooting 4-over for the day on Thursday, Hunter Wolcott is 4-over for the tournament after an even par outing during round one. Wolcott is tied with Nevin in 27th place.
Â
Brayden Garrison shot 6-over 76 for the day on Thursday, bringing his two-round score to 11-over and putting him in 64th place.
