DURHAM, N.C. – Tennessee senior shortstop Liam Spence has been named to the midseason watch list for the 43rd annual Golden Spikes Award, as announced by USA Baseball on Wednesday afternoon.
Spence was one of 45 players to make the midseason watch list, which includes the top amateur players from the high school and college ranks. The SEC led all conferences with nine players named to the list.
The complete 2021 Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list can be found HERE.
The Golden Spikes Award Advisory Board will continue to maintain a rolling list of athletes, allowing players to play themselves into consideration for the award before announcing the semifinalists on June 8.
Spence joins former Tennessee standouts and first-round picks Christin Stewart (2015) and Nick Senzel (2016) as the only players to be named to the award's midseason watch list since it was instituted in 2013.
The Geelong, Australia native has had an incredible season to this point, leading the SEC in batting average (.405) and on-base percentage (.538) while ranking fifth in the league in both hits (45) and runs scored (35). Spence leads the Vols with a .568 slugging percentage and is tied for second on the team with five stolen bases and eight doubles. He has also hit two homers and driven in 21 runs while primarily batting in the leadoff spot this season.
