Diving Central: NCAA Zone B Championships
March 05, 2021 | Swimming & Diving
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee sends nine divers to the NCAA Zone B Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina, as divers from around the region compete for positions at the NCAA Championships later this month.
The zones championships run Sunday through Tuesday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Grace Cable, Kara Holt and Elle Renner all qualified for zones for the Lady Vols. Ana Celaya Hernandez also earned her qualifying scores, but due to an injury sustained at the SEC Championships will be unable to compete.
On the men's side, Bryden Hattie, Will Hallam, Dillon Richardson, Keegan Richardson, Jacob Reasor and Matthew Wade all qualified for zones and will be in competition in Greensboro.
In all, 66 men and women are slated to compete over three days. They represent 15 schools from around the Southeast including: Tennessee, Alabama, Auburn, Duke, Florida, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, Florida International, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, North Carolina State and South Carolina.
Seven spots at NCAAs are up for grabs for the women on 1-meter and 3-meter, while eight spots are available on platform. The men have 10 open slots at NCAAs on 1-meter and eight available spots on 3-meter and platform.
The number of open positions for each zone is dependent on how well divers from a particular zone perform at NCAAs the season prior. Due to the NCAA Championships being canceled last season, results from the 2019 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships were used to determine the number of positions open for Zone B on each board this season.
Last season, Cable, Hernandez, Hallam and Wade all qualified for the NCAA Championships. Cable, Hallam and Wade earned their spots on 1-meter and 3-meter springboard, while Hernandez reached NCAAs on platform.
If a diver qualifies in one event, they can compete at NCAAs if they finish in the top 12 in other eligible events.
