Hussey's Clutch Play Leads to SEC Player of the Week Acclaim
March 31, 2021 | Men's Tennis
Following two massive wins in singles play and a doubles point clinch in doubles against Kentucky, graduate student Giles Hussey has been named the SEC's player of the Week for the second time during the 2021 dual season.
Hussey went 3-0 on the weekend, while activating his clutch gene twice in the Vols tight, 4-3, victory over the Wildcats, clinching both the doubles point and match point.
In Friday's dominant, 7-0, victory over Vanderbilt, Hussey knocked off Max Freeman, 6-2, 6-2 to put UT up, 3-0, and on the brink of clinching match point.
On Sunday against Kentucky, Hussey and doubles partner Mark Wallner pushed past Yasha Zemel and Joshua Lapadat, 6-3 to clinch the doubles point and an all-important, 1-0 lead for the Orange & White.
In singles, Hussey took down Lapadat again at the No. 5 position. He first battled through a first-set tiebreak, where he fell behind early after having his serve broken, before forcing the breaker and cruising, 7-3, to take a one set advantage.
Hussey then rolled in the second set, 6-2, to clinch match point and the Vols eighth Sec victory of the dual season.
The Swindon, England native is currently ranked 93rd in the latest ITA singles rankings and holds singles records of 14-3 in dual play and 6-1 in SEC action. Hussey and Wallner have also been solid, holding an 11-4 record in dual play as a pair.
Hussey and the third-ranked Vols return to action this weekend with a Sunday afternoon road contest with Arkansas. First serve from Fayetteville is slated for 2 p.m. ET.
