GREENSBORO, N.C. – Juniors Matthew Wade and Michael Houlie had standout performances on night three at the 2021 Men's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships from the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Wade placed sixth in the nation on the 3-meter springboard with a mark of 411.65. The Mallorca, Spain, native earned his sixth All-America honor with his placement. In prelims, Wade qualified for the A-final with a fifth-place finish, scoring 398.25.
"I am really proud of Matt's performance all day long," diving coach Dave Parrington said. "With his 1-meter yesterday I really felt like he set himself up for a strong performance today. I could see it coming, I saw some really good things in his takeoffs and his hurdles, which I felt like would transfer over to the 3-meter competition today. That's exactly what happened. He was really consistent and competed really well. It was a really strong performance all day long and he was rewarded with sixth-place in the country against a stellar field."
Houlie threw down a massive time in the 100 breaststroke B-final, swimming a lifetime-best 51.26. The Cape Town, South Africa, native got to the wall first in the B-final and lowered his own 100 breast school record in the process.
The breaststroker picked up Honorable Mention All-America honors for his swim.
"It was an awesome swim," associate head coach Lance Asti said. "Our team needed a boost of energy and Michael is usually really good at giving that energy. He had this infectious enthusiasm tonight and raced with a lot of emotion. It was really awesome. He just keeps getting better and Tokyo is always on his mind and this gives him another shot of confidence that he is on the right path to do that. He is racing against some of the world's best and competing with everybody."
In the 100 butterfly, senior Kayky Mota placed 16th in 45.92. The Sao Paulo, Brazil, native earned Honorable Mention All-America honors with his performance.
"Kayky did the job in the morning and got himself into a final and essentially matched his best time," Asti said. "He put himself into a great position to compete and then as a coaching staff we told him to take out the race and be aggressive. He went out quite a bit faster and maybe paid for it a little bit at the end but we're going out there expecting to win heats. He may have faded but he did what we asked him to do. He took the race out hot and we want to be aggressive at this meet. I was really proud of him for getting it done in the morning and then letting it rip at night."
The 200 medley relay of Micah Chambers, Houlie, Mota and Scott Scanlon finished 16th nationally in a time of 1:24.19. With their time, the quartet set the seventh-fastest 200 medley relay in school history.
Chambers was out in the backstroke in 21.76, before giving way to Houlie who split in the breaststroke in 23.06. Mota swam the butterfly leg in 20.54 and Scanlon brought home the relay with a freestyle leg of 18.83.
The foursome earned Honorable Mention All-America honors with their 16th-place finish.
"We saw that aggressive mentality with the relay as well," Asti said. "You have Micah, a freshman, who has been thrust into this backstroke leg and has done such a great job filling that role for us at this meet. Then Michael and Kayky coming off individual swims and big Scott Scanlon with a lifetime-best at the end with the 18.8. He was thrilled and he anchored us really well."
Freshman Bryden Hattie had another solid day on the boards, earning Honorable Mention All-America accolades with a 10th-place finish on 3-meter springboard. The Victoria, British Columbia, native placed second in the consolation final, scoring 402.25.
"It was a fantastic performance for a freshman who isn't necessarily considered a springboard diver," Parrington said. "To finish 10th at the NCAA Championships as a freshman is a wonderful performance for him. He also dove with an awesome amount of composure and stayed in the game and came up just a few points shy of making the big final. He stood up and moved up a spot in the consolation final."
