March 26, 2021 | Men's Golf
WEST POINT, Miss. – The Tennessee men's golf team is tied for fifth place following a solid round one performance Friday at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship.
Â
The Vols shot 2-under 286 as a team for the day with Spencer Cross and Hunter Wolcott shooting under par, as well as individual Tyler Johnson. No Vol shot worse than 1-over for the day and no Tennessee golfer is outside the top-33 of the 84-man field.
Â
"We had a really good round going and didn't finish it off the way we would have liked too," head coach Brennan Webb said. "There are lots of positives to take away from today and we're looking forward to getting back at it tomorrow."
Â
Cross, who has been Tennessee's highest finisher at two of its three spring tournaments, led the Vols with a stellar 3-under round one performance that saw him shoot three straight birdies as he closed out the back nine.
Â
Cross is tied for fifth place entering round two, searching for his fourth career top-five individual finish. The Sevierville native has now carded four par or better rounds in a row dating back to the Tiger Invitational.
Â
Two strokes behind Cross was Wolcott, who was 1-under for the day. Wolcott is tied for 15th place entering round two and looking for his fifth top-20 finish of the season. Tied with Wolcott in 15th place at 1-under was Johnson, who is competing as an individual.
Â
Rhys Nevin, Bryce Lewis and Jake Hall all shot 1-over during round one. The trio is tied for 33th place, but just two strokes out of the top-15 in the tightly-contested field.
