Tennessee Shot Put Records Fall Thursday At FSU Relays
March 25, 2021 | Track & Field
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee All-American shot putters Latavia Maines and Jordan West each opened their 2021 outdoor seasons in record-breaking fashion as UT kicked off the week's action at the FSU Relays in Tallahassee, Florida. Both athletes set all-time program records in the women's and men's shot put Thursday night at Mike Long Track.
Â
The reigning back-to-back SEC indoor shot put champion, Maines made her first outdoor appearance as a Lady Vol on Thursday and recorded a mark of 17.73 meters (58-2) to win the event at Florida State. The redshirt junior broke the all-time program record of 17.66 meters (57-11.25) set by seven-time All-American Annie Alexander in 2011. Additionally, Maines' performance ranks No. 1 in the NCAA this season and makes her the No. 4 performer in the world during the early stages of the 2021 outdoor campaign.
Â
Making his first attached outdoor appearance since 2018, West began his outdoor season with a heave of 19.82 meters (65-0.5) to improve his own program record from three years ago by three centimeters. The throw placed second at FSU and ranks him No. 4 in the NCAA and No. 12 in the world this season. The Rahway, New Jersey, native owns an outdoor personal-best of 20.33 meters (66-8.5) that was recorded unattached on June 22, 2019.
Â
Competing at both the FSU Relays and Raleigh Relays on Thursday, Tennessee athletes posted seven top-3 finishes and seven personal-best marks. Read below for more highlights from both meets.
