GREENSBORO, N.C. – Just one event, the 800 freestyle relay, was contested Wednesday night as the 2021 Women's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships opened up in Greensboro, North Carolina, at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
The Lady Vol quartet of Alexis Yager, Claire Nguyen, Trude Rothrock and Tjasa Pintar finished 16th in the event with a time of 7:04.08. Their time is the 10th-fastest 800 free relay in program history.
Yager led off the relay with a personal best time in the 200 free, swimming a 1:46.36. Jumping into the water for the third leg, Rothrock split at 1:44.94, which is a new best split.
"I'm really proud of this relay," associate head coach Ashley Jahn said. "They put points on the board and competed really well. Alexis swam a best time in the lead off by a second. Trude swam her fastest split ever by over a second. Tjasa had the second-fastest last 50 in the entire field of 17 teams. It's a big deal and cause for celebration to be a Honorable Mention All-America relay. Alexis, Claire and Trude have joined an elite field of athletes that are All-Americans for the first time."
The championships will have a full slate Thursday beginning at 10 a.m. ET with the preliminaries of the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free. The swimmers return for finals at 6 p.m. and will open with the 200 freestyle relay and close with the 400 medley relay.
The championships are available to stream on ESPN3 and live stats and scoring are available at this link, divemeets.com and the Meet Mobile app.
