Monday Garners Second Consecutive SEC Freshman of the Week Award
February 03, 2021 | Men's Tennis
Following a victory over the sixth-ranked player in the country to help lead Tennessee past Notre Dame, Tennessee tennis freshman Johannus Monday has been named the SEC's Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive week.
On Friday afternoon, Monday battled past No. 6 Richard Ciamarra in come-from-behind fashion to complete Tennessee's sweep of the Fighting Irish.
After dropping the opening set, Monday ripped past Ciamarra to force a deciding third set just before the Vols had clinched match point. Monday then used a late service break to push the match to a third-set tiebreak which he won, 7-5, earning his fifth dual match victory of the season.
Monday has played in all six of UT's dual matches at either the No. 1 or No. 2 positions in both singles and doubles—a rare role for a freshman at this level of collegiate tennis—racking up a collective record of 10-2 (5-1 singles, 5-1 doubles).
Overall, Monday is 14-3 on the year in singles play and has already taken down two ranked opponents.
The Vols return to action for two weekend matches on Friday against Duke and Sunday against NC State. Both matches are set to get going at 1 p.m. ET from the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
