Swim & Dive Central: SEC Men’s Swimming Championships

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – After the women's team took its turn at SECs last week in Athens, Georgia, it is time for the men to dive into the championship water Tuesday through Friday in Columbia, Missouri.
Due to COVID-19 protocols set in place by the SEC's Medical Guidance Task Force, the SEC Swimming and Diving Championships are split for the first time since 1986. Women's SEC Swimming Championships and Men's and Women's SEC Diving Championships ran last week in Athens and Columbia, respectively.
As a result of men's diving competing last week, the Vols already have 191 points on the board and one gold medal courtesy of freshman Bryden Hattie on platform.
The swimming championships begin Tuesday with time trials at 11 a.m. ET. Finals of the 200 medley relay start at 6 p.m. and will be followed by the 800 free relay final. All relay races will be timed finals.
All sessions of the championships will air live on SEC Network+.
This will be the second time Missouri has hosted the championships. The last time in 2016, the Vols finished sixth.
TOP TIMES
The SEC Championships have an A, B and C final with eight qualifiers in each final heat. Finishers are scored 1-24 with the SEC Champion scoring 32 points for winning her A final while the last place finisher in the C final scores one point.
Across all events, the Vols hold 36 times that rank inside the top 24 in the SEC this season.
TENNESSEE BREASTSTROKE
Tennessee's breaststroke group has shined all season and boasts three swimmers inside the top eight in the 100 breast. Headlining the group is junior Michael Houlie who currently ranks third in the conference with a time of 51.89.
Jarel Dillard and Brett Champlin rank seventh and eighth in the SEC, with times of 52.72 and 52.93.
In the 200 breast, Houlie is fourth in the league entering SECs with a time of 1:54.77, while Champlin sits fifth at 1:55.16.
BUTTERFLY EFFECT
Senior Kayky Mota is one to keep an eye on as he ranks fourth in the SEC in the 200 butterfly and fifth in the 100. His fastest time in the 200 this season is 1:42.58 and 45.50 in the 100. Mota placed fourth in the 200 fly and fifth in the 100 fly at SECs in 2020.
