Lady Vols in Second Following Opening Round of Gators Invitational
February 21, 2021 | Women's Golf
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Four Lady Vols occupy the top 25, including two top-10 efforts as Tennessee stands in second place at 6-over, 286, following Sunday's opening round of the Gators Invitational.
Tennessee overcame windy conditions en route to a strong showing through 18 holes.
"The conditions were tough today," head coach Judi Pavon said. "It got windy early in the round which made the course play tough. Everyone did a good job of keeping focused and fighting for pars and birdies all day."
Micheala Williams-Luck birdied hole nine to wrap up the first round and reach even-par after 18 holes. She enters round two on Monday in a tie for fourth place, after her 42nd career round of par or better.
Freshman Kayla Holden is playing well in her home state for the second consecutive tournament, rolling in three birdies over the final six holes of the day. She currently sits in a tie for ninth with a score of +1 (71).
"Kayla played a really steady round today and made three birdies in a tough four-hole stretch," Pavon said. "She made two bogeys on her last two holes but had a really good round overall."
Mikayla Bardwell birdied twice in the opening three holes of round one and finished the day with a big-time birdie on hole nine. She carded a score of +2 (72) and is tied for 12th place.
Sophomore Nicole Whiston rounded out Tennessee's counting scores with a +3 (73) performance on Sunday. She is tied for 21st after a two-birdie day.
Vanessa Gilly shot +5 (75) in the opening round at the Mark Bostick Golf Course to round out the Lady Vol lineup. The freshman is currently tied for 40th place.
The birdies from Williams-Luck and Bardwell to close the round on hole nine highlighted a strong outing for the Lady Vols.
"Those two birdies on nine were great to put us in the final pairing heading into the second round," Pavon said. "It's always great experience to be in the last group of the day, so we will look forward to that tomorrow."
