Thomas Earns Spot On TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week
February 16, 2021 | Soccer
CULVER CITY, Calif. ꟷ Tennessee redshirt freshman Jaida Thomas has been named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Women's Team of the Week, the publication announced Tuesday morning.
Â
The forward from Irving, Texas, recorded a hat trick in UT's 6-0 victory over the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs on Sunday, scoring three goals in a 15-minute span early in the first half. The performance doubled Thomas' season tally, as she leads the Vols and ranks second in the Southeastern Conference with six goals during the 2020-21 campaign.
Thomas' three goals were the most by a Vol in a single match since Bunny Shaw scored thrice in a 3-1 win at Kentucky on September 28, 2018. Thomas also made history as the first UT freshman with a hat trick since former Lady Vol All-American Keeley Dowling had three goals at Alabama on October 7, 2001.
Â
This is the first TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week honor of Thomas' career, and the fourth for Tennessee during the 2020-21 season. Senior center back Wrenne French was recognized by the publication twice on November 10 and September 29, while sophomore Claudia Dipasupil earned a Team of the Week nod on November 3.
Â
The Vols will continue their spring campaign this weekend with an eastward road trip to face the Appalachian State Mountaineers. Kickoff is set 12 p.m. at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex in Boone, North Carolina.
