Crigger Posts Historic Mile At Vandy, Vols Grab Three SEC-Leading Marks At Clemson
February 12, 2021 | Track & Field
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee track & field program had a historic performance in the men's mile Friday night at the Music City Challenge, while UT's group at the Tiger Paw Invite put up three performances that rank atop the 2021 SEC leaderboard during the afternoon.
Â
MUSIC CITY MILERS: Tennessee senior Alex Crigger took more than four seconds off his personal-best in the mile at Vanderbilt, clocking a time of 4:04.23. In doing so, the Johnson City native now ranks as the No. 7 performer in program history as his mark was the fastest by a Vol since Tim Pitcher in 1991 (4:03.34).
Â
Redshirt junior Conner Hawkins also threw down a PR for Tennessee on Friday, crossing the finish line in 4:05.15. His time was less than a quarter of a second from breaking into the UT all-time top-10 and was the fastest by any Vol besides Crigger since at least 2010.
Â
FASTEST WOMAN IN THE SEC: Lady Vol redshirt sophomore Joella Lloyd demolished her personal-best in the 60-meter dash, running an SEC-leading 7.20 for the win at Clemson University's Tiger Paw Invite. The St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda, native defeated reigning SEC Women's Runner of the Week and Bowerman watch list votes receiver Abby Steiner (7.21) from Kentucky to claim the league's top spot in the event so far this season.
Â
With her performance Friday afternoon, Lloyd ranks first in the SEC and fourth in the NCAA this year. She also equaled the No. 2 performer in Tennessee women's history, as former Lady Vol Cleo Tyson also ran a 7.20 at the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Courtney Champion holds the school record at 7.15, clocked at the 2007 SEC Indoor Championships in Lexington, Kentucky.
Â
On the world level, Lloyd's mark ranks No. 2 among U20 athletes and No. 20 overall during the 2020-21 indoor season.
Â
SHOT PUT UNIVERSITY: The Tennessee throwers asserted their dominance on the competition at Clemson Friday afternoon, posting conference-leading marks in both the men's and women's shot put.
Â
Redshirt junior Jordan West got the day started for UT with an indoor personal-best heave of 19.73 meters (64-8.75) for second place at the meet. His performance leads all other SEC shot putters this season by at least 40 centimeters and ranks as the No. 8 mark in the country on the NCAA Indoor qualifying list.
Â
Latavia Maines had her eighth-straight meet as the top collegian in the women's shot put, this time taking first place with an impressive sixth-round throw of 17.29 meters (56-8.75). Her mark was good for a new season-best as Maines regained the SEC lead and now ranks No. 4 in the NCAA.
Â
SWEEPING THE LONG JUMP: The Big Orange had a pair of sophomores earn long jump titles Friday evening in Nashville. On the men's side, Oklahoma City native Anthony Riley picked up his second-straight victory with a leap of 7.46 meters (24-5.75). Coming off an indoor top-10 all-time Lady Vol long jump performance last week, Shatara Johnson earned her first collegiate win with a mark of 6.08 meters (19-11.5).
Â
WILSON LOGS SB: Lady Vol sophomore Britton Wilson ran sub-54 in the women's 400-meter dash for the first time this season, turning in a time of 53.90 for fifth place at the Tiger Paw Invite. The mark moves her up five spots to No. 15 on the 2021 SEC leaderboard.
