Vols in 10th Through Day One at Gators Invitational
February 12, 2021 | Men's Golf
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The fourth-ranked Tennessee men's golf team is in 10th place through one day of competition at the Gators Invitational.
Due to expected inclement weather moving into the area later in the weekend, an effort was put in to play as many holes as possible on Friday. Each team completed one full round of competition as well as at least 12 holes of round two.
The Vols shot 7-under as a team during Saturday's competition.
"We have played very solid tee-to-green, but haven't really gotten going around the greens yet, and that is really the only separator on this golf course," head coach Brennan Webb said. "With everyone still in the round we have a chance to come out tomorrow and finish off the second round well and have a great third round."
Tennessee's day one performance was highlighted by Rhys Nevin, who shot 5-under and is tied for fourth place overall entering Saturday. Nevin's outing was powered by a six-birdie first round as well as two more in the first 12 holes of his second round.
At 1-under, the Vols' second-best score came from Spencer Cross. Cross is tied for 42nd place and sits just two strokes outside of the top 20. Cross shot 1-under 69 during round one – his fourth round of par or better this season.
Just one stroke back from Cross is Bryce Lewis, who shot even par during Friday's competition and is tied for 54th place. Lewis shot an even par round of 70 during round one, which marks his team-leading eighth round of par or better this season.
Brayden Garrison also shot even par during round one and was 1-over during the first 12 holes of round two.
Hunter Wolcott rounded out Tennessee's day one scoring, shooting 4-over during round one and 1-under during the first 12 holes of round two. Wolcott is 3-over and tied for 85th place entering Saturday.
Competing as an individual, Tyler Johnson turned in an impressive 2-under performance and is tied for 27th place in his first action of the 2020-21 season.
Second round play is currently scheduled to resume at 8 a.m. ET Saturday morning. Due to inclement weather expected on Sunday, play is expected to be completed on Saturday.
