KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Senior Danielle Mahaffey and super senior Breana Runnels have been named VolleyballMag.com All-America Honorable Mention.
With the honors, Mahaffey and Runnels become the sixth and seventh Lady Vols all-time to earn VolleyballMag.com All-America recognition. They are the first since Tessa Grubbs and Erica Treiber in 2018 to be tabbed All-America by the outlet.
"We are proud of the recognition that Volleyball Magazine has given to Breana and Danielle," head coach Eve Rackham Watt said. "They both put up outstanding statistics throughout the course of the season, and both played a huge roll in our team success. Danielle and Breana are team-first players and were willing to do whatever it took to be successful. I am excited they are being honored."
For Mahaffey, it is her second All-America nod this season after earning AVCA All-America Honorable Mention. It is the first All-America award for Runnels.
Mahaffey finished the season with 183 kills, a .380 hitting percentage, and a career-best 139 blocks. The middle blocker ranks second in the Southeastern Conference in blocks per set at 1.38 – a mark that also ranks ninth nationally.
Her 1.38 blocks per set is the sixth-best single-season average all-time in Tennessee history.
Along with her strong net-front presence, Mahaffey was an effective attacker during the 2021 campaign as she hit a career-high .380. That mark ranked fourth in the SEC this season and 35th nationally. The Lady Vol finished fourth on the team with her 183 kills.
Runnels led UT this season with 394 kills and a 3.75 kills per set average in 2021. Her kills per set average ranks fifth in the SEC and is the 11th-best single-season average in Tennessee history during the rally-scoring era.
The Bakersfield, California, native also led the Lady Vols in points per set, averaging 4.15 for a total of 435.5 points over the course of the season. Her average ranked sixth in the conference.
