Lady Vols Fall on Day Two of ITA National Fall Championship
November 05, 2021 | Women's Tennis
SAN DIEGO, Calif – Both Tennessee women's tennis singles fell Friday afternoon at the ITA National Fall Championship at the Barnes Tennis Center, ending the fall slate of tennis.
Rebeka Mertena was the first match of the day. After dropping the first set, and falling behind early in the second, she came roaring back from down 4-1 to force a tiebreak frame. Second-seeded Daria Frayman from Princeton kept the pressure on, taking the tiebreaker, and the match, 6-0, 7-6.
Elza Tomase shortly followed Mertena, playing 67th-ranked Kylie Collins from Texas. The sophomore Longhorn found a groove early and never waivered as she downed Tomase, 6-1, 6-1.
The season finishes as a strong one for both Lady Vols. Tomase posted an impressive 17-5 singles record in five events and was crowned singles champion of the ITA Ohio Valley Regional. Mertena racked up 13 wins and represented the UT at the ITA All-American Championship and in the finals of the ITA Ohio Valley Regional.
