Mertena Powers Through First Match of ITA All-Americans
October 06, 2021 | Women's Tennis
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – After a rain-soaked day washed away the original schedule at the ITA All-American Championships, Rebeka Mertena powered through the only match of the day for the Tennessee women's tennis team at the LTP Tennis Club Wednesday.
After multiple schedule changes, the 55th-ranked Mertena finally took the court at 8:15 p.m. to face Victoria Hu from Princeton who had advanced through the qualifying draw into the main draw.
Mertena rolled through the match, winning 6-2, 6-1. The experienced Lady Vol saved six break point chances for Hu and was not broken the entire match. She won 25 points after connecting on the first serve and did not record a double fault.
Esther Adeshina and Daria Kuczer did not play their first-round match due to the length of the weather delay. They are slated to face No. 21 Solymar Colling and Elizabeth Goldsmith from San Diego, the time of that match is still to be determined.
Mertena moves on to play the 21st-ranked singles player, Carolyn Campana from Wake Forest, in the round of 16 with a projected start time of 9 a.m.
