Lady Vols Nab 13 Wins in Second Day of ITA Regionals
October 22, 2021 | Women's Tennis
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A triumphant second day of action is in the books at the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals. The Tennessee women's tennis team has four singles players remaining in the main draw and three doubles teams. One singles player and one doubles pair will battle through the consolation ladder.
Rebeka Mertena continued to dominate as the top seed in the tournament, starting the day off with an 8-5 doubles win with Elza Tomase. She then transitioned to singles action where she cleaned up a pair of victories, starting with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Monique Woog. She then took to Lara Schneider of Indiana for a 6-2, 6-1 finish, putting her through to the round of 16.
Tomase also has been hitting her stride. The freshman won her first singles match of the day 6-1, 6-0 over Emma Peeler of Ball State. Â She bested Laura Masic (Indiana) 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the round of 16. In her first two matches of the tournament, she only lost one game. The newcomer has already reached a double-digit win total on the season, amassing a 10-3 record.
Tenika McGiffin and Olivia Symons started the day off by winning their doubles bout 8-5. Symons continued her solid play making it to the round of 16 in singles after she took down UT Martin's Mizuki Sakurai 6-2, 6-0 in the round of 64, then Laylo Bakhodirova from ETSU 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 32.
Joining Mertena, Symons and Tomase in advancing in the main draw was Daria Kuczer. She tabbed a 6-1, 6-3 win over Mariya Polishchuk from Chattanooga, but was challenged in her second match of the day. In a three-set bout with Seira Shimizu from Purdue, Kuczer fell behind early after the Boilermaker senior battled to a 6-4 first set win. But the savvy veteran remained calm and took the next two sets with poise, 6-2, 6-1.
Callie Creath and Kylie Duckworth stayed alive in the main draw of doubles, taking the tiebreaker game against Belmont for an 8-7 win. Creath saw the results today of her hard work in training, winning the first set 6-3 over Krystal Grubb, then dominating the second frame, 6-0.
The Lady Vols are back in action Saturday as they look to continue their masterful play at Middle Tennessee State. The first two rounds of action will be doubles play after the majority of Friday was spent on singles. Full results from Friday can be found below.
