Lady Vols Open Season with Three Wins at Secret City Head Race
October 16, 2021 | Rowing
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – Tennessee rowing opened its 2021-22 campaign with a strong showing at the Secret City Head Race in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, boasting the fastest boat in three events.
Â
"It's been two years since we were last here, and it's kind of surreal to think about how long it's been since we've competed at a fall race," head coach Lisa Glenn said. "Everyone was excited to get out here. We did a nice job of being prepared and handling the conditions well. All of our boats left it all out on the water, and I'm happy about the performance that we had for our first outing."
Â
The day began with three Lady Vol boats competing in the Women's Collegiate Novice 8+ event. The team of Joey Monachelli, Ellie Brooks, Grace Wolfenbarger, Brady Cavanagh, Autumn Pavuk, Sydney Judd, Reagen Horn, Melody McRee and Lindsey Jouannet took first 18:58.3, while the B and C boats placed third and fourth, respectively.
Â
In the Women's Open 8+, Madelyn Walsh coxed the squad of Emma Seawright, Haley Savastano, Lindsey Morrissett, Sydney Pardy, Reagan Long, Kathleen Rice, Jaimie Armitage and Katherine Schildmeyer to a first-place finish with a mark of 15:59.2, beating the second-fastest time by 1:45.
Â
Tennessee ended the day with a bang, as its four boats in the Women's Open 4+ took the top four spots in the event. It was the team of Abigail Bacci, Erin Gifford, Madison Kirkman, Beatrice Bernard and Natalia Loram that claimed the fastest time at 17:53.8.
Â
"I think the group did a nice job, and it takes everyone for one great performance," Glenn said. "The fours looked solid and consistent. I thought our eight executed really well. I wouldn't say there was only one boat that stood out. Also, our novices did a great job today as they continue to get acclimated to collegiate rowing."
Â
The Lady Vols will be back in action next weekend to wrap up the fall slate, traveling to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to compete in the Head of the Charles Regatta. UT will race Saturday (Oct. 23) and Sunday (Oct. 24).
