LAS VEGAS – Current and former Tennessee swimmers competed in the Las Vegas Open Water Champions Cup this past weekend, highlighted by VFL David Heron winning his fourth U.S. Open Water title and freshman Summer Smith placing second in the women's 5k elite race.
Heron took first in the men's elite 5k race, posting a time of 54:33.21, and finished second in the 10k race with a mark of 1:40:46.75. Smith, who won the 500 and 1000 freestyle in her collegiate debut at UNC Wilmington the weekend before, finished second in the 5k with a time of 57:33.80.
In total, Tennessee had nine swimmers compete in the national event, with eight of them on the active roster. Sophomore Joey Tepper was the only other Vol to compete in both the 5k and 10k races, finishing eighth and ninth, respectively. Fellow sophomores Jacob Narvid (9th) and Rafael Ponce de Leon Castilla (10th) also swam in the 5k race.
On the women's side, no one participated in the 10k race. Freshman Alyssa Breslin placed sixth in the 5k event, while senior Danika Katzer finished eighth and freshman Lauren Wetherell came in ninth. Freshman Summer Eaker rounded things out by finishing 11th.
Up next, Tennessee will take on a pair of tough opponents from the ACC in NC State (Oct. 15-16) and Louisville (Oct. 21). The meet against Louisville will be UT's home opener for the season and will be an Olympic Traditions Meet to honor current and past UT swimming & diving Olympians.
