McLeod's NCAA No. 4 Long Jump Highlights Friday At Bob Pollock Meet

CLEMSON, S.C. — Competing in the long jump for the first time this season, Tennessee junior Carey McLeod posted a top-5 mark in the NCAA with his leap of 7.90 meters (25-11) Friday evening at Clemson University's Bob Pollock Meet. His performance ranks 12th in the world, fourth in the NCAA and second in the SEC for marks recorded during the 2020-21 indoor season.

McLeod took third place at the meet, as his best jump of the day came on his sixth and final attempt at Clemson. The Kingston, Jamaica, native recorded two other marks above 25 feet in the series, jumping 25-7.5 (7.81m) and 25-6 (7.77m) on Friday. His personal-best of 26-10.5 (8.19m), recorded last year at the SEC Indoor Championships, is a Tennessee school record and top-20 mark in NCAA history.

MILER PRs GALORE: Tennessee's distance crew logged six personal-best times in the mile on Friday, highlighted by redshirt-junior Conner Hawkins placing first on the men's side with a time of 4:07.26. The Cookeville native was running the first official mile of his college career, having been timed as fast as 4:03.31 in a 1600-meter split of the distance medley relay.

Other personal-bests for the Volunteer men included a nine-second improvement by sophomore Riley Buchholz, who clocked in at 4:09.04 for third place at the meet. True freshman Mike Griffin, a two-time Massachusetts high school state champion in the mile, finished fourth in 4:11.31 with junior Karl Thiessen right on his heels at 4:11.62. Senior captain Alex Crigger kept pace for the group on Friday and was sixth across the finish line in 4:14.30.

On the women's side, Katie Thronson and Olivia Janke ran the mile for the first time this season as both Lady Vols achieved personal records. Thronson took fifth at the meet in 4:48.98, followed by Janke who was sixth with a time of 4:51.59.

VAULTERS CLEAR SEASON-BEST JUMPS: Lady Vol pole vaulters Hannah Jefcoat and Ellison Colarossi each turned in season-best performances for Tennessee on Friday afternoon. Jefcoat towered over 3.95 meters (12-11.5) for sixth place overall, while Colarossi equaled her best clearance of 2021 with a mark of 3.50 meters (11-5.75).
