KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Former Tennessee soccer standout Katie Cousins has signed her first professional contract, inking a deal with Thróttur Reykjavík of the Icelandic Úrvalsdeild women's league.
A member of the Tennessee soccer team from 2015-19, Cousins finished her collegiate career as one of the most well-decorated players in program history. The midfielder from Forest, Virginia, is one of three Tennessee players to be recognized as a two-time All-American, earning back-to-back third team honors from the United Soccer Coaches in 2017 and 2018.
She also received three All-Southeast Region honors, one of six Lady Vols to ever accomplish that feat. At the conference level, Cousins garnered the respect of the league's head coaches throughout her career with four All-SEC nods, including two first-team selections in 2017 and 2018.
Cousins totaled 74 matches played, 72 starts, seven goals, 13 assists and 27 points as UT's primary holding midfielder for four seasons. She was a key contributor for the Vols during the program's remarkable 2018 campaign, recording career-highs in goals (3) and assists (4) as she helped lead the Big Orange to its first-ever NCAA Tournament quarterfinal appearance and a consensus top-10 final ranking.
Thróttur FC, known locally as Knattspyrnufélagið Þróttur, finished 5th in the Úrvalsdeild women's league last year. Former Vol MA Vignola scored six goals in 12 appearances for the club in 2020, and has since signed on with league runner-up Valur Reykjavík for the 2021 campaign.
Cousins is one of eight active pros from the Tennessee soccer program—joining former Vols Carlyn Baldwin (Sporting CP), Maya Neal (Le Havre AC), Sonia Ouchene Salon (Stade de Reims), Bunny Shaw (Bordeaux), MA Vignola (Valur Reykjavík), Hannah Wilkinson (MSV Duisburg) and Shae Yanez (London City Lionesses). Additionally, 2019 graduate Michelle Alozie is slated to compete with the Houston Dash of the NWSL during preseason competition next month.
