A national audience on CBS and a record crowd of 107,653 watched a gigantic early-season SEC night matchup on Sept. 19, 1998 at Neyland Stadium as the sixth-ranked Volunteers hosted the second-ranked Florida Gators. The game was a tense, hard-fought battle between two of the top defensive units in the country. The score was knotted at 10 at halftime and tied at 17 at end of regulation forcing the first overtime game in Tennessee history. In the first overtime placekicker Jeff Hall kicked a 41-yard field goal to put the Vols up 20-17. The Vol defense kept the Gators out of the endzone, and Florida's tying field goal attempt was no good setting off a raucous celebration on Shields-Watkins Field. Tennessee's defense caused five turnovers and linebacker Al Wilson caused a school-record three fumbles. In addition to two Hall field goals, Tennessee fullback Shawn Bryson and wide receiver Peerless Price scored touchdowns for the Vols. The victory was a huge early step in Tennessee's undefeated journey to the 1998 SEC and National Championship.
