Against the backdrop of the 1982 World's Fair in downtown Knoxville, the upset-minded Tennessee Volunteers ended 11 years of frustration with an upset of the No. 2-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide on a beautiful "Third Saturday in October". The victory was Johnny Majors' first coaching win over Alabama and its legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant – who was making his last appearance at Neyland Stadium.
Tennessee took an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter but quickly fell behind and trailed the powerful Tide 21-13 at the half. The second half, however, belonged to the Vols, and after Chuck Coleman's 34-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, the Vols held a 35-21 lead with seven minutes to go in the game. Tennessee withstood a furious Alabama rally as Lee Jenkins tipped and Mike Terry intercepted a Crimson Tide pass in the endzone with 17 seconds left on the clock to preserve a thrilling 35-28 triumph.
The dramatic victory sparked a wild celebration described by the Vol Network's John Ward as "Pandemonium Reigns" that saw both goal posts come down and paraded around campus and the Cumberland Avenue "Strip." Coleman rushed for 139 yards. UT quarterback Alan Crockrell threw for 192 yards and two touchdowns, including a 52-yard bomb to Willie Gault who set the SEC career yardage record for kickoff and punt returns in the game. Future NFL Hall of Famer Reggie White and All-Pro Bill Bates were part of a Tennessee defense that held Alabama to eight points in the second half.
Â
Special highlights of the broadcast include John Ward's pregame coverage of the Vols "Running Through the T", the legendary George Bitzas singing the national anthem, a special patriotic halftime performance by the Pride of the Southland Band and the UT Singers, extended postgame coverage of the victory celebration and locker room interviews with Bates and Majors. Vol Network Classics is presented by the East Tennessee Chevy Dealers and Hullco.
