The longest game in Tennessee football history was a defensive struggle for much of regulation. After leading 10-3 at halftime, the 10th-ranked Vols stretched their lead to 17-3 early in the fourth quarter over the Razorbacks. Arkansas, who would go on to become the 2002 SEC Western Division Champions, roared back to score two touchdowns to tie the game at 17 with three minutes left and sent it to overtime. During the tense six-overtime thriller the Vols survived a blocked field goal that still made it over the crossbar and a fumble that gave the ball back to Arkansas.
Quarterback Casey Clausen, who was 19 of 28 for 291 yards and two touchdowns, also suffered a broken collarbone during one of the overtime periods but refused to come out of the game. Clausen threw a perfect 25-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jason Witten to win the game in the sixth overtime period 41-38. Running back Jabri Davis had a big night running for 135 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries. Linebackers Keyon Whiteside and Robert Peace led the Tennessee defense with 13 tackles each while defensive tackle Demetrin Veal had 3.5 tackles for loss and a sack.
Â
Bob Kesling, Tim Priest and Jeff Francis handle the Vol Radio Network broadcast. Special postgame content features an interview with future NFL All-Pro Witten and Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer. Vol Network Classics is presented by the East Tennessee Chevy Dealers and Hullco.
