Tennessee Welcomes Ian Van Cott as Volunteer Assistant
June 16, 2020 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee men's tennis head coach Chris Woodruff has announced the addition of former ECU assistant coach Ian Van Cott to the team's coaching staff as a volunteer assistant.
Van Cott served the past three seasons with the Pirates, helping to guide them to 47 victories over three years. ECU was especially dominant at home, winning 28 of its 30 home contests during his tenure.
"Ian brings a wealth of experience to our team," Woodruff said. "He helped lead ECU to a record number of wins while he was there, but also played for our associate head coach James McKie at Tulane. They have a very strong working relationship, which will be beneficial to our players."
Before the 2019-20 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 global heath crisis, the Pirates were off to an 11-2 record under Van Cott.
Prior to his move to ECU, Van Cott was a volunteer assistant coach at Princeton for the 2016-17 season. The Tigers went 14-12 during the year, while Alex Day and Luke Gamble qualified for the NCAA Tournament in doubles. The pair were the top Ivy League team and ranked 59th nationally.
"We are very fortunate to have Ian join our program," McKie said. "His love for tennis and his passion for coaching is unmeasurable."
At Tulane, Van Cott was a four-year letterwinner as he posted a 52-46 career record in singles, while going 43-20 in doubles. He also helped lead the Green Wave to the NCAA Tournament during his senior season where the team won its first NCAA match in over 11 years.
"I am very excited to be at Tennessee and it's a great opportunity," Van Cott said. "Getting to work alongside coaches Woodruff and McKie and to work with this team, I couldn't be more excited to be here."
Van Cott adds even more experience to a program that during the shortened 2020 campaign, won 14 of 16 matches and was on pace for its third-straight 20-plus win season.
