Zoom Reunion: 2000 SEC Champion Basketball Vols
May 18, 2020 | Men's Basketball
20 years after winning the SEC and reaching the Sweet Sixteen, the Vols reconnect
Tennessee basketball coach Rick Barnes recently hosted a Zoom reunion of the 1999-2000 team that shared the SEC Championship and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen.
The 20-year virtual reunion included VFLs Del Baker, C.J. Black, Vegas Davis, Jenis Grindstaff, Marcus Haislip, Tony Harris, Ron Slay, Zach Turner, Isiah Victor, Terrence Woods and Vincent Yarbrough.
The Zoom call also included a guest appearance by former Auburn basketball standout Daymeon Fishback, who played against that Tennessee squad and now works as a basketball analyst for the SEC Network.
Tennessee's 1999-2000 team was coached by Jerry Green, who was named the 2000 CBSSportsline.com National Coach of the Year, and finished 26-7 (12-4 SEC). The 26 wins were then a program record.
That season capped a three-year stretch during which the Vols won 67 games. That 1999-2000 team was the quickest in program history to reach the 20-win mark, needing only 23 games to do so. UT's year-end AP ranking of No. 11 was the second-best in program history at the time.
Tennessee won two games in the NCAA Tournament, defeating Louisiana-Lafayette and UConn to advance to the Sweet Sixteen.Â
