Vol Network Classics: 1986 Sugar Bowl Airs Saturday
May 01, 2020 | Football
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee Vol fans will be treated to the 1986 Sugar Bowl in this weekend's installment of Vol Network Classics across the state of Tennessee on participating Vol Radio Network affiliates. The broadcast airs at noon ET/11 a.m. CT Saturday at utsports.com and through the UT GameDay app.Â
Vol Network Classics is available on over 25 radio affiliates across the state of Tennessee with most broadcasts on Saturdays around midday. Check your local listings.Â
On a night that Vol fans will never forget, Tennessee capped its first SEC Championship season in 16 years on January 1, 1986, with a 35-7 victory over the No. 2 ranked Miami Hurricanes at the Superdome in New Orleans. An estimated 60,000+ Big Orange fans dominated the decimal meter from pre-game through postgame and played a big factor in aiding an inspired Tennessee defense that put overwhelming pressure on Miami star quarterback Vinny Testaverde all night long.Â
Following a fake punt on the first series of the game, Miami scored first on a touchdown pass to Michael Irvin. That would be the last points of the night for the heavily-favored Hurricanes who would have been named national champions with a victory over the Volunteers. The Vols rallied to take a 14-7 lead at halftime and broke things open in the third quarter, punctuated by running back Jeff Powell's legendary 60-yard touchdown gallop down the Superdome sidelines. The looping, blitzing Tennessee defense sacked Testaverde seven times for 84 yards and intercepted him three times. UT quarterback Daryl Dickey, who stepped in mid-season after an injury to star quarterback Tony Robinson, was named the game's MVP.
Special highlights and features of the broadcast include exclusive audio from the Tennessee locker room pregame and postgame, John Ward's iconic pregame call of the Volunteers running through the T, Lee Greenwood signing "God Bless the U.S.A." with the Pride of the Southland Band and retrospective interviews with VFLs Charles Davis and Dale Jones.
