Cable, Hallam and Wade Add Second Board for NCAA Championships
March 10, 2020 | Swimming & Diving
ATHENS, Ga. – Grace Cable, Will Hallam and Matthew Wade each added a second event to their NCAA Championship schedule Tuesday at Georgia's Gabrielsen Natatorium.
"All three of them did what they needed to do," diving coach Dave Parrington said. "It was a kind of nip and tuck day with tight battles going on in both the men's and women's competition. It is a deep field on both sides so that is to be expected, but it was great to see all three add a second event to their respective NCAA championships."
Wade and Hallam finished inside the top 12 on the 1-meter board Tuesday, locking in their spots for the event at the Men's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships later this month. Wade placed ninth in the event with a score of 629.50, while Hallam finished 11th at 615.35.
The duo qualified for NCAAs on Monday in the 3-meter springboard event and only had to finish in the top 12 to be eligible to compete on the 1-meter board at nationals.
"They fought hard today and didn't make any big errors," Parrington said. "Both Matt and Will had a solid day of competition and when it really mattered most they both stepped up and nailed their dives."
Keegan Richardson was also in competition for the Vols on Tuesday. The junior narrowly missed the cutline in prelims, finishing 20th with a score of 275.65.
For the women, Cable posted a score of 593.10 to place 10th in the 3-meter springboard competition. The sophomore diver qualified for nationals Monday on the 1-meter board and like Hallam and Wade, only needed to place among the top 12 to be eligible for the 3-meter event at NCAAs.
"Kind of like Matt and Will, Grace had a solid day up on the boards," Parrington said. "There were a couple of times she needed to really hit her dives and she did just that. We are still working to get her totally back from her hand injury at SECs, but she is a warrior and keeps on pushing through to fight for her team."
The Lady Vols also had junior Ana Celaya Hernandez and freshmen Elle Renner and Emily Ann Wolfson in competition Tuesday as fellow freshman Kara Holt scratched from the event.
Renner was just off the cutline in prelims as she placed 21st, scoring 267.05. Hernandez finished 38th with a dive score of 234.90, while Wolfson was 40th at 232.00.
