February 28, 2020 | Football
The Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame has announced former Tennessee quarterback Heath Shuler as an inductee of the 2020 Hall of Fame Class.
Shuler's selection was made public during an on-court presentation during UT's home basketball game Saturday. Tennessee Director of Athletics Phillip Fulmer joined Shuler on the court for the announcement.
"There have been many elite football players in the University of Tennessee's history, but Heath Shuler ranks among our very best," Fulmer said. "He was ahead of his time as a quarterback, excelling as both a passer and a rusher. His toughness always stood out, and he was a terrific leader. Those leadership skills obviously carried over to his career as a U.S. Representative. I'm thrilled to see Heath receive this honor from the Hall."
Shuler joins an already-robust list of inductees which includes former Titans coach Jeff Fisher, Vanderbilt baseball Coach Tim Corbin, NBA legend Tony Delk, three-time Stanley Cup winner Terry Crisp, advocate for women in sports Bettye Giles, former ETSU and Auburn basketball coach Sonny Smith, former executive director of the Tennessee Golf Association Dick Horton and college football coach Carl Torbush.
Shuler played at Tennessee in the 1991, 1992, and 1993 seasons, serving as the starting quarterback in 1992 and 1993. He led the Vols to a 18-5-1 record during that time, was named 1993 SEC Player of the Year, and finished as the runner up in the 1993 Heisman Trophy voting. Shuler was the No. 3 overall selection in the 1994 NFL Draft, selected by the Washington Redskins.
"We are thrilled to have Heath Shuler join the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2020," said Brad Willis, Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Chief Advancement and Operations Officer. "Heath's tenure at the University of Tennessee was an exciting time that Tennessee fans will long remember."
A native of Bryson City, North Carolina, Shuler in 2006 was elected to represent North Carolina's 11th District as a congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives and served two terms.
The complete 2020 induction class, induction ceremony details and ticket information will be announced in the coming weeks.
