Four Podium Finishes Highlight Virginia Tech Challenge
February 22, 2020 | Track & Field
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Tennessee track & field earned four top-three finishes this weekend as the program sent a small group of six Vols to compete at the Virginia Tech Challenge in Blacksburg.
Â
Lady Vol senior Alexis Duncan opened the meet for UT with a victory in the 60m hurdles, running a time of 8.26 in the final Friday night. The DeSoto, Texas, native edged the field by nearly 0.4 seconds to cruise to her first event title of the season.
Â
Redshirt-sophomore thrower Jordan West earned his third win of the season in the men's shot put on Saturday, logging a throw of 18.75 meters (61-6.25) on his fifth attempt. The mark topped all competitors in the field by more than a meter at Virginia Tech.
Â
Jalen Tate was the top collegiate finisher in the men's triple jump on Saturday, recording a season-best leap of 15.97 meters (52-4.75) for second place at the meet. The mark ranks Tate No. 6 in the SEC and No. 16 in the NCAA this season.
Â
In the men's 400-meter dash, sophomore Jonathan Sacoor ran the fastest time of his collegiate indoor career at 47.36 in his season debut — good for the top time by a collegian at the meet. Vol rookie Sebastian Cooper returned from injury and clocked in at 48.13, a new personal-best indoors for fourth place on Saturday.
Â
Tennessee junior Hannah Jefcoat recorded the fourth-best indoor performance of her career in the women's pole vault with a clearance of 4.16 meters (13-7.75). The Dacula, Georgia, native took three attempts at 4.31 meters (14-1.75) for the all-time program record but was unable to clear the bar.
Â
UP NEXT: Tennessee will begin postseason action next week at the 2020 SEC Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Texas A&M at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium in College Station. The conference meet is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, February 28-29.
