Bats On Fire Early
Tennessee's bats are off to a hot start after a season-opening sweep of Western Illinois and a midweek win over Charlotte. The Vols scored 45 runs during their three wins over the Leathernecks, including 19 on Saturday and 23 on Sunday, and added eight more against the 49ers on Tuesday. Through four games, UT is second in the SEC and fourth nationally in scoring at 13.3 runs per game. Tennessee also ranks sixth in the country with 53 total runs.
Â
Notable offensive achievements from the Vols' opening series sweep are listed below:
While the offense has certainly stolen the show, the pitching staff has been just as effective, posting a pair of shutouts while holding opponents to just six total runs so far this season. UT held Western Illinois scoreless over the first 22.1 innings of the season and posted back-to-back shutouts to open the season for the second consecutive year. The Vols lead the SEC and rank fourth in the nation with a 1.25 ERA entering this weekend.
Notable pitching stats from last weekend's series are listed below:
The Vols have displayed their increased power through the first four games this season. The Big Orange have already  hit eight home runs (two in each game), which leads the SEC and ranks fourth in the nation. For comparison, it took Tennessee 10 games to hit eight home runs last season. Five Vols have already gone deep this season, including three with two homers each (Zach Daniels, Jake Rucker and Austin Knight).
Successful Debuts
The Big Orange had 11 players make their Tennessee debuts last the weekend.
Junior infielder Liam Spence led all newcomers with four runs scored while posting three hits and three RBI. He also was outstanding defensively while splitting time at shortstop and second base, recording 10 assists, two putouts and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. Freshman two-way standout Drew Gilbert also impressed, going 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI at the plate while also striking out the side in one inning of relief.
On the mound, junior RHP Jackson Leath had 12 strikeouts in just 4.1 innings of work on Sunday to earn his first win as a Vol, while Kody Davidson and Mark McLaughlin both tossed two shutout innings over the weekend.
