Vols Tied For Fifth Through One Round at Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate
October 25, 2020 | Men's Golf
FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The Tennessee men's golf team began competition at the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate Sunday and sits in a tie for fifth place heading into the tournament's second round.
The Vols shot 8-under 276 in a tightly-contested field, which features all 14 SEC schools.
"We didn't have our best stuff, but we did a good job of hanging around until we made some birdies at the end of the day to keep ourselves within striking distance with two days to go," head coach Brennan Webb said.
Tied for sixth place individually heading into Monday's second round, senior Rhys Nevin led the way for Tennessee on Sunday, shooting 5-under 66. The Cheshire, England, native was aided by three birdies on his final five holes and zero holes over par during all of round one.
Nevin's round of 66 is tied for his lowest round as a Vol, matching his previous best set back in 2017 at The Jackrabbit – a tournament in which he finished as individual runner-up.
Both Nevin and Spencer Cross bounced back from being Tennessee's bottom two finishers during the opening tournament of the fall to being the top two Vols through Sunday's opening round.
Cross is tied for 21st place entering round two after shooting 2-under 69 during round one. The redshirt junior's final eight holes consisted of four birdies.
Tennessee's top two finishers at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational earlier this month, Bryce Lewis and Hunter Wolcott gave the Vols their final two counting rounds.
Lewis shot 1-under for the day, registering his fourth straight round of par or better. The redshirt freshman is tied for 29th place. Wolcott shot even par on the day and sits in a tie for 40th place.
Senior Brayden Garrison shot 3-over for the day and is tied for 61st place.
Tennessee is set to tee off round two of the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate on Monday at 10 a.m. ET.
