Lady Vols in the Mix Following Opening Round of The Ally

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Three rounds of par or better and four counting scores in the 70s have the Tennessee women's golf team sitting in sixth-place (+2, 290) and in contention after the opening round of The Ally at Old Waverly.
"This course is really familiar to us and our players really like the layout," coach Judi Pavon said. "It's a really fair course and good shots get rewarded out here. The par 5's are really good birdie opportunities and we took advantage of that on nine and ten."
Graduate student Micheala Williams led the way for UT, firing home a mostly mistake-free score of 2-under (70) that included a bogey-free front nine and five total birdies. Williams' day has her in a tie for sixth place heading into round two.
"Micheala made a bunch of birdies today and got it to 5-under, before mistakes on 13 and 15 backed her up a little bit," Pavon continued.
Following Williams was freshman Vanessa Gilly, who continued her early consistent play, posting a 1-under score of 71, including a bogey-free back nine, placing her in a tie for 10th.
"Vanessa was very steady all day, rolling in two birdies and only taking one bogey. She hit the ball well and just played really solid golf," Pavon said.
Junior Mikayla Bardwell was the third Lady Vol to post a score of par or better with an even par 72 that sees her in a tie for 21st. It was a largely up-and-down day for Bardwell who rolled in five birdies and an eagle, but put up a few big numbers that brought her back to par.
Senior Waverly Whiston rounded out the Tennessee scoring lineup, shooting 5-over par (77) and sitting in a tie for 54th.
