Romig Named SEC Defensive Player of the Week
October 12, 2020 | Soccer
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Tennessee sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Romig has been selected as the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon. The Vols' shot stopper recorded a career-high tying eight saves to help UT secure a 2-1 victory over Missouri on Friday.
"Lindsey has been fantastic for us throughout the entire preseason and the first four weeks of this season," head coach Brian Pensky said. "Friday was just another example of that. She's commanding our back line, she's making saves and she's helping us win games. That's what great goalkeepers do."
The Midlothian, Virginia, native faced a season-high 19 shots and nine shots on goal against the Tigers. None were more impactful than a 30-yard Missouri attempt with eight seconds left in regulation that was tipped over the cross bar by Romig—clinching the Vols' second home victory of the 2020-21 campaign.
Six of Romig's eight saves against Missouri came in the second half, including three stops over the final seven minutes of regulation.
"We knew that [Missouri] was going to come flying at us, and we had to be prepared for anything," Romig said after the match. "The last five minutes were really hectic, and we knew it was going to be like that. I had to be ready and set at any time because I knew they were going to be shooting from far."
This is the second weekly conference honor for Tennessee this season, as Jaida Thomas was named SEC Freshman of the Week on September 28. Romig is the first Vol to earn SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors since September 14, 2015, when Julie Eckel won the award with back-to-back shutouts against Arkansas and Belmont.
Tennessee will travel to Lexington, Kentucky, this weekend for its fourth consecutive SEC East contest. The Vols (2-2) and Wildcats (0-3-1) will square off in front of a national TV audience on Sunday, October 18, as the match will be aired on ESPNU. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. at the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex.
