Rhodes Records No. 4 Pentathlon In Lady Vol History At Texas Tech Invite

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Tennessee junior Kiara Rhodes took second place in the women's pentathlon to highlight Tennessee's opening day at the Texas Tech Invitational. The Memphis native logged a career-best total of 3,975 points across five events Thursday afternoon at the Sports Performance Center.

Rhodes' total was good for a 213-point personal best and moved her to No. 4 on the all-time Lady Vol performance list for the pentathlon. It was the best outing for UT since alumna Ellen Wortham posted 4,042 points at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 11, 2011.

Rhodes recorded three personal records on the day in the high jump (1.71m / 5-7.25), shot put (10.05m / 32-11.75) and 800m run (2:25.35). She was also the top collegiate finisher in the women's 60m hurdles with a time of 8.34.

Rhodes currently ranks No. 5 on the 2020 NCAA indoor qualifying list with her pentathlon performance on Thursday, and her total of 3,975 leads all SEC competitors by more than 300 points this season.

SOTO STARTS STRONG: Through four events in the men's heptathlon, Tennessee freshman Yariel Soto sits second in the standings with 3,010 points in his collegiate multi-event debut. The Hatillo, Puerto Rico, native logged PRs in the 60m dash (7.01) and long jump (7.38m / 24-2.5) on Thursday.

CAREER DAY FOR DAVIS: UT rookie Peyton Davis posted personal records in three of four events in the heptathlon, finishing the first of two days with 2,768 points. The freshman from Centralia, Missouri, posted indoor career-bests in the 60m dash (7.47), long jump (6.90m / 22-7.75) and shot put (12.08m / 39-7.75).

UP NEXT: Tennessee will continue competing at Texas Tech over the next two days, beginning Friday at 1 p.m. ET with the men's heptathlon 60m hurdles. Field events begin at 4 p.m. with the women's weight throw, while track action starts at 6 p.m. with the women's 60m hurdles prelims.
