Senior Tessa Grubbs finishes with a team-high 11 kills in the loss to the Bearcats
EAST LANSING, Mich. – No. 21 Tennessee dropped the opening match of the Spartan Invitational in three sets to Cincinnati (18-25, 19-25, 23-25).
After trailing for much of the final set, the Lady Vols battled back, tying up the set at 22-22 when sophomore Danielle Mahaffey and senior Alyssa Andreno teamed up to block the Bearcats' Jordan Thompson.
Despite the late 5-2 run from Tennessee, it was unable to force a fourth set as Cincinnati closed out the match in three sets.
Senior outside hitter Tessa Grubbs led the way with 11 kills from the left pin. Six of her kills came in the final set as the Lady Vols nearly pushed the game to the fourth set.
On the opposite pin, freshman Morgahn Fingall and sophomore Danielle Mahaffey tallied seven kills each while both hitting north of .300 for the match.
Senior setter Sedona Hansen fell just short of her third double-double in three matches this season, finishing with a team-high 20 assists and six digs.
Standout Stat
The Lady Vols play their second match in the Spartan Invitational against Miami (OH) at Jenison Fieldhouse later today.
First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network+.
