Cousins Named Senior CLASS Award Candidate
September 23, 2019 | Soccer
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Redshirt senior midfielder Katie Cousins has been selected as one of 30 NCAA Division I women's soccer players to be named a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as a senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Â
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Â
From the list of 30 candidates, a committee will select 10 finalists for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award. Those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote. Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches and media to determine the recipient of the award - who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
Â
Community • Cousins has been an active community servant during her five years at Tennessee. She has worked with organizations such as the Emerald Youth Foundation, Kicks for Kids, Goals for Girls and the Race Against Alzheimer's, and has logged more than 130 hours of community service since the summer of 2015. Cousins also served as a member of the 2017-18 VOLeaders Academy, which culminated with a week-long service trip to Ecuador.
Â
Classroom • Set to graduate this December with her degree in Theater, Cousins is a four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes student-athletes who record a cumulative GPA above a 3.0. She has been named to the dean's list three times (Spring 2017, Spring 2018, Fall 2018).
Â
Character • Cousins was a member of the innovative VOLeaders Academy during the 2017-18 academic year. The organization uses student-athletes' platforms in sport to positively impact their teams, campuses, and local and global communities. The year-long campaign culminated with a trip to Ecuador, where the VOLeaders completed service projects and interacted with youth through sports and games.
Â
Cousins has also served as a member of Tennessee soccer's leadership council the past two years, helping guide the Vols to their best season in program history in 2018.
Â
Competition • Cousins returns for her redshirt-senior season as a back-to-back third-team United Soccer Coaches All-American. She is a three-time All-SEC performer, earning first-team league honors the past two seasons. She was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Preseason Watch List this year and was rated as the No. 5 player in the country according to TopDrawerSoccer.
Â
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2019 NCAA Women's College Cup championships in December. For more information on all the candidates, visit seniorCLASSaward.com.
