Vols in the Pros Update: Sept. 16

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – With the MLB regular season concluding in just a few short weeks and most minor league seasons already finished, the majority of former Vol baseball players have either wrapped up their seasons or are about to head into the playoffs.
An update on how all of UT's former players are doing in pro baseball this season can be found below.
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL (MLB)
Nick Senzel -- OF, Cincinnati Reds
Season: 104 G, 55 R, 96 H, 20 2B, 4 3B, 12 HR, 42 RBI, 30 BB, 14 SB, .257 AVG, .316 OBP, .428 SLG
After posting solid numbers during his rookie campaign, Senzel will miss the rest of his rookie season due to a torn labrum in his right shoulder, the Reds announced on Sept. 13. In his last outing, he went 0-for-1 before being taken out of the game due to the injury against the Diamondbacks on Sept. 5.
Christin Stewart -- OF, Detroit Tigers
Season: 93 G, 32 R, 81 H, 23 2B, 1 3B, 10 HR, 39 RBI, 33 BB, .247 AVG, .322 OBP, .415 SLG
Stewart was put on the seven-day injured list on July 30 and was sent down to Triple-A Toledo before returning to the Tigers on Sept. 3. Since his return earlier this month, Stewart has been hitting .310 with 13 hits, three home runs and six RBIs in 42 at-bats.
Drew Steckenrider -- RP, Miami Marlins
Season: 15 App, 0 GS, 0-2, 6.28 ERA, 14.1 IP, 10 R, 10 ER, 9 H, 5 BB, 14 K, 0.98 WHIP
Steckenrider hasn't pitched for the Marlins since May 6 after being put on the 60-day injured list with right elbow inflammation. The right hander was sent to the Class A Jupiter Hammerheads on Aug. 1 for a rehab assignment. Steckenrider started and pitched one scoreless inning in his lone appearance for the Hammerheads on Aug. 1. Â
Yan Gomes -- C, Washington Nationals
Season: 86 G, 30 R, 58 H, 11 2B, 10 HR, 37 RBI, 34 BB, 1 SB, .211 AVG, .309 OBP, .360 SLG
After struggling throughout most of August, Gomes had a strong finish to the month with hits in four of the last five games he played in. Gomes hit a pair of solo home runs in a win at Atlanta on Sept. 8 and homered again on Sept. 12 in a victory over Minnesota. The Nationals currently hold a 1.5 game lead over the Cubs for the first wild card spot in the National League.
MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL (MiLB)
Andrew Lee -- P, Harrisburg Senators (AA – Washington Nationals)
Potomac Nationals (A-Adv.): 16 App, 11 GS, 2-5, 3.45 ERA, 70.1 IP, 32 R, 27 ER, 53 H, 33 BB, 76 K, 1.22 WHIP
Harrisburg Senators (AA): 11 App, 4 GS, 0-1, 2.56 ERA, 38.2 IP, 15 R, 11 ER, 27 H, 17 BB, 30 K, 1.14 WHIP
Lee capped a solid season with 0.2 scoreless innings in his final appearance of 2019 on Sept. 1 after struggling in his previous three appearances.
Jordan Rodgers -- 3B, Florida Fire Frogs (A-Advanced – Atlanta Braves)
Season: 67 G, 18 R, 40 H, 7 2B, 5 HR, 20 RBI, 6 BB, .204 AVG, .234 OBP, .316 SLG
Rodgers struggled toward the end of the season but ended the year with a 1-for-3 performance that included an RBI in the Fire Frogs loss to the Charlotte Stone Crabs on August 29.
A.J. Simcox -- SS, Lakeland Flying Tigers (A-Advanced – Detroit Tigers)
Erie SeaWolves (AA): 4 G, 0 R, 2 H, 1 3B, 4 RBI, .154 AVG, .143 OBP, .308 SLG
Lakeland Flying Tigers (A-Adv): 103 G, 40 R, 94 H, 13 2B, 9 3B, 1 HR, 28 RBI, 30 BB, 16 SB, .253 AVG, .312 OBP, .345 SLG
Simcox finished the regular season strong for the Flying Tigers. He nearly finished the season on a 12-game hitting streak (August 16 to 25) before he went 0-for-4 in the loss to Clearwater on August 26. Simcox posted two more hits over his final three games of the season.
Andy Cox -- P, Daytona Tortugas (A-Advanced – Cincinnati Reds)
Dayton Dragons (A): 11 App, 0 GS, 0-1, 6.60 ERA, 1 SV, 15.0 IP, 15 R, 11 ER, 14 H, 17 BB, 21 K, 1.78 WHIP
Chattanooga Lookouts (AA): 2 App, 0 GS, 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 4 K, 1.50 WHIP
Daytona Tortugas (A-Adv): 35 App, 0 GS, 3-4, 2.45 ERA, 9 SV, 36.2 IP, 13 R, 10 ER, 34 H, 20 BB, 49 K, 1.47 WHIP
Cox impressed to get called up to Double-A Chattanooga on August 10 and made one appearance for the Lookouts. In his lone appearance, he tossed 1.0 scoreless innings with a strikeout and gave up just one hit. Cox was sent back down to Daytona and finished out the year giving up five hits and no runs in the final five games.
Zach Warren -- P, Clearwater Threshers (A-Advanced – Philadelphia Phillies)
Season: 40 App, 0 GS, 1-3, 3.30 ERA, 7 SV, 60.0 IP, 25 R, 22 ER, 43 H, 38 BB, 80 K, 1.35 WHIP
Warren posted three straight scoreless outings to cap off his 2019 campaign. The big lefty did not allow a baserunner in two innings of work as Clearwater defeated St. Lucie 5-0 on Aug. 22. Warren followed that up with two more innings of shutout ball in a 5-1 loss to the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Aug. 26. He finished the year with one shutout inning of work in a 3-1 win over Lakeland on Aug. 29.
Andre Lipcius -- 3B, West Michigan Whitecaps (A – Detroit Tigers)
West Michigan Whitecaps (A): 67 G, 32 R, 69 H, 16 2B, 2 HR, 29 RBI, 27 BB, .273 AVG, .346 OBP, .333 SLG
Lipcius has been a steady performer for the Whitecaps during his first season of professional baseball. The Virginia native had a five-game hitting streak, from August 15 to 19, snapped in a loss to Lake County on Aug. 20. Lipcius bounced back with a solid performance against the Great Lakes Loons where he went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs on Aug. 21. The rookie posted four multi-hit outings over his last nine games to finish the year.
Andrew Schultz -- P, Lakewood BlueClaws (A – Philadelphia Phillies)

Schultz had three consecutive scoreless outings to finish his first season of pro ball. After an up and down start to his career, the hard-throwing right hander allowed just four hits in his last 5.2 innings of work to end the season.
Ricky Martinez -- SS, Hillsboro Hops (A-Short – Arizona Diamondbacks)
Hillsboro Hops (A-Short): 62 G, 34 R, 68 H, 10 2B, 0 HR, 16 RBI, 26 BB, 15 SB, .283 AVG, .362 OBP, .325 SLG
Martinez had an impressive debut season with the Hillsboro Hops, helping lead the team to to the Northwest League (NWL) Title. As one of the top hitters for the Hops, Martinez went on a seven-game hit streak to finish the regular season and also posted a hit in each of the Hops first three playoff games. Â
Kyle Serrano -- P, Tri-City ValleyCats (A-Short – Houston Astros)
GCL Astros (ROK): 2 App, 2 GS, 0-1, 22.50 ERA, 2.0 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 H, 5 BB, 3 K, 3.50 WHIP
Tri-City ValleyCats (A-Short): 14 App, 13 GS, 0-4, 7.71 ERA, 14.0 IP, 19 R, 12 ER, 11 H, 26 BB, 23 K, 2.64 WHIP
Serrano gave up just three hits over his final four appearances of the season. The Knoxville native struck out the side in one scoreless inning against Hudson Valley on August 24.
Justin Ammons -- OF, Bluefield Blue Jays (Rookie-Advanced – Toronto Blue Jays)

Since being called up on July 29, the Memphis native has been on a tear for the Bluefield Blue Jays. Ammons finished the year with hits in six of his last seven games. He quickly became one of Bluefield's top hitters with a .382 batting average and .490 slugging percentage over the course of 25 games while also stealing 12 bases.
Jay Charleston -- 2B, Burlington Royals (Rookie-Advanced – Kansas City Royals)
Burlington Royals (Rookie-Advanced): 36 G, 24 R, 27 H, 3 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 11 RBI, 18 BB, 16 SB, .220 AVG, .329 OBP, .285 SLG
Charleston had a hit in four of his last five regular-season games, but still struggled with strikeouts at times. Charleston finished the year batting .220 with 24 runs scored while stealing 16 bases.
